Organic Green Tea in the UK: Your Go-To Refreshment for Late Summer Days
As August moves into the UK with a heatwave likely to bless us in the next few weeks, many of us are seeking lighter, more refreshing drinks. At this time of year, coffee can feel too much, while sugary drinks provide zero health benefits.
Organic green tea emerges as the perfect balance: healthy, clean and cooling, and full of gentle flavours.
If you’re struggling to choose from our quality loose leaf teas, here are a few reasons to choose green tea this summer and autumn.
Why Organic Green Tea?
Green tea has been well-loved in East Asian cultures for centuries. Sourced from the Camellia sinensis plant (as is black and oolong teas) it is steamed or pan-fired shortly after harvesting. This gentle process helps to retain its natural antioxidants and vibrant green colour.
But what makes ‘organic’ green tea special?
-
No synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. This means a cleaner, more natural taste, ideal for delicate palates.
-
Environmentally-responsible farming. Many organic green teas are grown in harmony with nature, on smaller farms, located at high altitudes.
-
Fuller flavour profiles. From grassy and nutty to sweet and floral, our organic green teas offer complexity and character that mass-produced blends often lack.
If you run a wellness cafe or restaurant, these types of teas are highly popular with those dedicated to clean living. They will also reflect well on your reputation if you’re promoting sustainable living.
Discover Exciting New Blends this Summer
At Cup of Tea UK, we’ve hand-selected authentic green teas from China and Japan, where tea growing is both an art and a tradition.
Among our rare blends is Japanese Matcha 'Hisui' Organic Green Tea. Matcha tea is a type of finely ground green tea powder, traditionally made from shade-grown Japanese green tea leaves called tencha.
Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is whisked into hot water and consumed whole. It therefore delivers more nutrients and a stronger flavour. Mild, fruity and delicately tart, this provides a delightful experience for every matcha lover.
Along with organic teas, we also sell regular green teas of premium quality.
How to Make Iced Organic Green Tea at Home
As iced teas grow in popularity, especially among those cutting back on sugary drinks, it’s worth learning to make them at home. Luckily, organic green tea makes an excellent base.
Here’s a simple method for cold-brewing organic green tea:
What you’ll need:
-
1–2 teaspoons of loose-leaf organic green tea
-
500ml cold, filtered water
-
A glass jar or bottle with a lid
Instructions:
-
Add the tea leaves to your jar.
-
Pour in cold water and stir briefly.
-
Seal the lid and refrigerate for 6–8 hours (or overnight).
-
Strain and serve over ice. Garnish with fresh mint, lemon slices, or cucumber.
Since this technique is so gentle, it avoids that bitterness many people don’t like, bringing out the tea’s natural sweetness.
Tip: If you prefer a stronger brew, increase the tea-to-water ratio or steep for a few hours longer.
Green Tea and Health: Why It’s More Than Just a Summer Fad
Beyond taste, green tea is prized for its health benefits: a key reason it’s become a go-to beverage for the health-conscious in the UK.
Some of its most many benefits include:
-
Rich in antioxidants, especially catechins like EGCG, which help fight oxidative stress. Oxidative stress happens when your body has too many harmful molecules called free radicals, and not enough antioxidants to stop them.
-
May support metabolism. Green tea has often been seen as a gentle way to burn fat and support your digestive system.
-
Improve your ability to concentrate, thanks to L-theanine, a calming compound that balances the effects of caffeine.
-
Anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea may well improve the health of your heart and potentially reduce joint pain.
As part of a balanced lifestyle, organic green tea offers far more than hydration: it’s a wellness boost.
Indian Summer Pairings: What to Serve With Green Tea
Looking to make an occasion of it? A cup of green tea goes beautifully with:
-
Light salads with citrus dressings
-
Grilled fish or tofu
-
Seasonal fruits like melon, nectarine, or berries
-
Rice-based dishes like sushi or onigiri
-
Light pastries, such as shortbread or almond biscuits
All of these are ideal for afternoon teas, picnics or alfresco dinners in the garden.
