Marvellous Mint Teas

Marvellous Mint Teas

Mint Tea is probably one of the world’s favourite herbal teas. It’s enlivening, refreshing and aromatic, and a wonder in aiding digestion. Like all herbal teas, mint is naturally caffeine-free, and our range of mint teas is 100% pure-leaf with nothing added. We really do believe that mint tea, whether peppermint, spearmint or a minty infusion, are truly marvellous. Mint is a wonder-herb that works well in many infusions and tisanes that is delightfully peppy and thoroughly enjoyable. With added health benefits, the mighty mint is a truly versatile herb suited perfectly for culinary and aromatherapy purposes.

Minty Myths & History

There are many myths surrounding mint tea. One of our favourites is in Greek Mythology. According to legend, the God Pluto was caught in the arms of a nymph called Menthe, by his wife. Driven by jealousy, Pluto’s wife turned Menthe into a plant. Pluto did not intervene, but in memory of the beautiful Nymph, he gave the plant an attractive minty scent. Mythology aside, mint has been found in Egyptian tombs dating as far back as 1000 BC. During the Middle-Ages, mint was scattered to disguise bad smells in the home and beyond. The Greeks used it to clean their tables, and in baths to stimulate the senses. The Romans added mint to food to aid digestions and to help with oral hygiene. There are over thirty mint plant varieties, and they’re all appreciated for their aroma and high content of essential oil. Mint is said to improve breathing and soothe cramps within the digestive system. Mint also contains Vitamins A and C, and a collection of minerals to boost health. The fresh or dried leaves need to be brewed with boiled water and infused for around 8 - 10 minutes to get the full taste and benefits.

Moroccan Mint Tea

In North Africa and the Middle-East mint is undoubtedly one of the most favourite beverages. ‘Proper’ Moroccan Tea is prepared with green tea, fresh spearmint leaves and blocks of sugar, which is famous for its strength, flavour and potency. Drunk ceremonially, and traditionally-prepared by the male patriarch of the family, it is a sign of hospitality to guests, friends and family members. With the sugar and spearmint added to the teapot itself, the brewed and sweetened tea is the elaborately poured into decorative glasses at a substantial height to gently aerate the infusion. Although ‘Moroccan Tea’ is considered a mint tea, and it does begin with strong green tea and lots of spearmint.

Here’s our recipe which can be tweaked to taste, but sugar will play a considerable part in that because of the richness of the strong Gunpowder green tea.

Make Your own Moroccan Tea

  • Boil (filtered) cold water
  • Place 1 teaspoon per person of Green Oasis Gunpowder green tea in a teapot
  • Pour over some freshly boiled water – swirl gently and discard the water retaining the tea – this process wakes up the tea!
  • Using the remaining boiled water, pour over the wet leaves
  • Steep the tea for 2 minutes
  • Add a handful of sprigs of fresh spearmint or dried peppermint to the pot
  • Add at least 3-4 teaspoons of granulated sugar into the teapot and stir
  • Allow the brew to infuse for 3-4 more minutes
  • Pour from a height (take care not to scald you or your friends!) into heat-proof glasses
  • Enjoy the bold, sweet flavours
